Tidings of comfort and joy
Friday December 24, 2010
‘Tis the season to be charitable and Temiskaming Lodge has reached out to those in need. The Haileybury long-term care supported the local Salvation Army’s holiday hamper program. “We are aware that at Christmas time there are people who require assistance to make their holiday meaningful,” says Kathy Ruddy, activity and volunteer co-ordinator at Temiskaming Lodge. “A call for help was passed through the building. The generosity of our members was overwhelming." People donated fruit, baby food and a turkey dinner with all of the trimmings, decorating items in ribbons and bows. Temiskaming Lodge recently delivered its contribution to the Salvation Army, ensuring a happier Christmas for fellow community members.

Kathy Ruddy - Dec 22 2010

We are aware that at Christmas time there are people who require assistance to make their holiday a meaningful and outstanding Christmas. A call for help was passed through the building; let’s make a Christmas Hamper for someone in the community”.
The local Salvation Army had a list of families who would require a hamper, so we knew there was a need.  The generosity of our members was overwhelming.  Apples, oranges, baby food and much more was generously donated. There were three vessels of food that we were able to produce, including the turkey and trimmings.  All wrapped up in bows and ribbons the hamper was delivered to one in need.
Sometimes we think we are helping someone in need only; however the outstanding feeling one receives from giving is a feeling of joy which enhances the Spirit of Christmas.
Happy Holidays to all from Temiskaming Lodge.

Temiskaming Lodge Nursing Home Helps Community
Wednesday November 17, 2010
Temiskaming Lodge residents are warming up their vocal chords for a special performance this holiday season. Twenty seniors at the 82-bed Haileybury long-term care home are part of a choir that will sing carols at Temiskaming Lodge’s Christmas party Dec. 15. Residents are busy rehearsing classics with the accompaniment of a volunteer on the piano. “They’re doing a really good job and having a lot of fun,” says Kathy Ruddy, activity and volunteer co-ordinator. The home is gearing up for the holidays in other ways too, with a volunteer and avid scrapbooker helping residents create homemade Christmas cards. Temiskaming Lodge is also working with a local photographer in hopes of offering glamour shots to residents, which they in turn can give to their loved ones as gifts.

Former trucker takes in Quebec truck rodeoTemiskaming Lodge personal support worker Francine Gaudet led the charge to help a retired trucker who lives at the Haileybury long-term care home attend a truck rodeo in Notre-Dame-du-Nord, Que. recently. “(He) was able to see the new trucks, watch the parade, watch the races, enjoy the live entertainment and be around truckers again,” says Kathy Ruddy, activity/volunteer co-ordinator at Temiskaming Lodge. She credits Gaudet for going above-and-beyond the call of duty. The PSW made arrangements for the van and driver and spent the day with the resident at the event. He enjoyed a weiner from a hotdog vendor and a cold beer. The retired trucker also came home with new T-shirts, a cowboy hat and a large poster for his room.

'Tis the season

Managers interact with public, utilize Facebook to solicit support
When Francine Gosselin heads out the door she tucks a few postcards in her purse.

While at the grocery store, she asks the cashier to sign a card in support of the 2011 Ontario Long Term Care Association (OLTCA) advocacy campaign, which calls for adequate funding to all long-term care home departments.

People are willing to sign as they realize it could be their loved one requiring long-term care, explains the administrator of Temiskaming Lodge in Haileybury.

Gosselin is collecting as many signatures as she can and says staff members are also soliciting support from the public.

“Everyone’s really getting engaged with this campaign,” Gosselin says.

“We’re (raising) a lot of awareness out in the community. People are receptive to it.”

Residents’ relatives are also getting involved because long-term care funding is an issue “very dear to them,” she adds.

“In this economy, it’s more important than ever. It’s important for the residents . . . to make sure they have a good quality of life.”

Employees at the 82-bed home are aiming to present 500 signatures to their local MPP next month.

Mike Dickin, director of operations of Provincial Long Term Care Inc. and administrator at Shelburne Residence, one of the organization's homes, is also getting involved with this year’s campaign.

By utilizing the Internet and engaging contacts he has made through his years of service to the sector, Dickin is spreading the importance of the message that all long-term care home departments need adequate funding.

“I have about 1,200 e-mail contacts and about 500 Facebook contacts, so I sent out a personal e-mail out to contacts on my list,” he says.

“I’ve also posted it on my Facebook page and have asked for the help of all the people on my page to sign.”

Provincial Long Term Care Inc.’s five homes are each aiming to collect 500 signed postcards.

The OLTCA is asking its 428 member homes to galvanize support from residents, families, friends, staff members and local communities to have their voices heard by filling out an
online postcard, or by completing paper postcards being sent to every member home.

The theme of this year’s campaign — “It takes a team to care” — centres on the important contribution each department in a long-term care home makes to enrich people’s lives every day, and how adequate government funding is crucial to ensure this is sustainable.

Signed postcards will be delivered to local MPPs. Online postcards, as well as contact information for local MPPs, can be found by
clicking here.

Home leaders are encouraged to meet with their local MPPs to discuss funding issues before the release of the 2011-12 budget in March.

Hats off to Temiskaming Lodge volunteers

Staff helps restore independence by observing residents at meal time

Temiskaming Lodge honoured its volunteers by hosting a roast beef dinner and murder mystery recently. About 100 people joined in on the fun at the Haileybury long-term care home April 22. "The murder mystery was an absolute hoot," says Kathy Ruddy, activity and volunteer director. "We like to entertain our volunteers. There was a great deal of laughter and fun had by the volunteers." The home honoured two volunteers with service awards, recognizing Irene Boucher as volunteer of the year. Temiskaming Lodge also acknowledged veteran volunteer Fernande Plante who has given her time to the home for 28 years. "We really work hard to express our appreciation."

'It's really a success story'

When a food service supervisor realized one resident wasn't eating a lot because she was self-conscious about using utensils to consume her sandwich, Marie St. George wondered how she could help.
